Horny

        Horny (volume 1)
The Best of Horn Funk

A ‘tight’ horn section was an essential component of many 1970’s era funk bands. The bare minimum Horn Section was comprised of at least a trumpet & tenor sax, but 6, 7 & 8 piece horn sections (including trombone, flute, alto sax, baritone sax & flugelhorn) were not unusual.

The rudimentary hits & accents offered by horn sections of the 1960’s (the Soul era) would evolve into intricate harmonies & counterpoints by the early ‘70s (the Funk era). The horns (and bass guitar) were the most prominently featured instruments in popular dance music with the horn section carrying at least as much melodic responsibility (sometimes even more) as the vocalists. Arrangers such as Fred Wesley (of James Brown, P-Funk) and Greg Adams (of Tower of Power) are notable for writing some of the most beautifully complex (yet funky) horn charts ever.

Upon completion of this mix, I realized that many of the greatest Horn Funk records of all time still remained in the crate of LPs & 45s on the floor beside me. Groups like EWF, AWB, BT Express, early Rick James, Zapp & Cameo, Charles Wright, The Blackbyrds, Trouble Funk, Stevie Wonder and others who deserve to be included here, simply got left out due to lack of space (gotta keep it less than 80 minutes to fit on a standard CD).

In the meantime, please enjoy Horny (Volume 1)-The Best of Horn Funk. I’ll start working on Horny (Volume 2) after I go out for a breath of fresh air. It’s Too Funky in Here!!!
