R&B Grooves - volume 1
April 26, 2011 01:21 PM PDT
This is a mix I did back in 2009. Great memories! 'Grown Folks Music' is mainly for the mature audience. 'Ol Skool' music is part of the mix, but also includes new music by r&b, hip-hop, southern soul, gospel, blues and smooth jazz artists as well. I made this mixtape to pay homage to some old faves and give props to the young bucks helping to keep this music alive. –DJ SaxMan- Titles/Mixes:

Horny (volume 1)
A ‘tight’ horn section was an essential component of many 1970’s era funk bands. The bare minimum Horn Section was comprised of at least a trumpet & tenor sax, but 6, 7 & 8 piece horn sections (including trombone, flute, alto sax, baritone sax & flugelhorn) were not unusual. The rudimentary hits & accents offered by horn sections of the 1960’s (the Soul era) would evolve into intricate harmonies & counterpoints by the early ‘70s (the Funk era). The horns (and bass guitar) were the most prominently featured instruments in popular dance music with the horn section carrying at least as much melodic responsibility (sometimes even more) as the vocalists. Arrangers such as Fred Wesley (of James Brown, P-Funk) and Greg Adams (of Tower of Power) are notable for writing some of the most beautifully complex (yet funky) horn charts ever. Upon completion of this mix, I realized that many of the greatest Horn Funk records of all time still remained in the crate of LPs & 45s on the floor beside me. Groups like EWF, AWB, BT Express, early Rick James, Zapp & Cameo, Charles Wright, The Blackbyrds, Trouble Funk, Stevie Wonder and others who deserve to be included here, simply got left out due to lack of space (gotta keep it less than 80 minutes to fit on a standard CD). In the meantime, please enjoy Horny (Volume 1)-The Best of Horn Funk. I’ll start working on Horny (Volume 2) after I go out for a breath of fresh air. It’s Too Funky in Here!!! Podcast SummaryA collection of mixes of my favorite music genres. Each mix is a PARTY in & of itself!!! About The JAM Factory/DJ SaxManSome of my most eye-opening musical experiences came about during my college/military days when I was stationed at an Air Force base near Boston, MA. On weekends we would drive to Long Island, NY or to Rhode Island where the parties were. DJ crews like Grandmaster Caz, The Cold Crush Brothers, The Jonzun Crew, Afrika Bambaata, DJ Kool Herc & many others would perform at community centers & block parties. We found ourselves hangin out with pro athletes and other celebrities including Eddie Murphy, boxer Marvin Hagler & lots of up & coming recording artists. I made my first mixtapes using a Pioneer double-cassette boombox while my military buddy Gomez (who was from Queens) rapped over the beats. LOL. After a weekend of watching GM Flash, Cosmo, Kool Herc & Caz along with the breakdancers & MC's do their thing we would head back to the military base & drop some beats & rhymes of our own. More recently, I toured for about 3 years as a saxophonist/soloist with legendary Southern Soul Artist Marvin Sease (The Candy Licker). I now perform for weddings, banquets, parties & special events. Visit www.tjfevents.com to book The JAM Factory featuring DJ SaxMan for your next event. New mixtapes published monthly. To submit your music, send CDs or vinyl to: The JAM Factory P.o.
